— About Richard —
I did not study small business. I grew up in one.
My family ran a construction business. I know what it means to watch your parents worry about the next job, manage crews, chase payments, and bet everything on their own name. That environment shaped how I think about business — not as a theory, but as something deeply personal with real consequences.
I went on to own a restoration business and a Cold Stone Creamery franchise. I have sat where you are sitting — managing employees, watching margins, trying to figure out how to grow without burning out. I know the pressure of making payroll. I know the frustration of investing in something that does not move the needle. I know what it feels like when a good month still does not feel like enough.
Then my path took a turn most small business owners do not get. I spent years leading inside sales organizations of nearly 400 people and a $440 million book of business. I became a Senior VP at Santander applying advanced data analytics to organizational performance. I earned my PhD and became one of the few academics in the country who researches inside sales exclusively. I now teach MBA students and consult with companies generating hundreds of millions in revenue.
